We took the train from Bayreuth, Germany to Nürnberg. Then, we took the tube to the Airport. About a 90 minute flight put us in Amsterdam, Netherlands. From Amsterdam Schiphol Airport we flew to Oslo, Norway and took a room in a hotel. There was still quite a bit of old snow in the outskirts of Oslo. We ate a steak dinner in a Chinese restaurant and got our first taste of how expensive it can be to visit Norway.

We took the bus to the Norsk Folkemuseum outside Oslo, Norway. This included indoor exhibits and traditional buildings outdoors. Nearby, we visited the Viking Ship Museum in Oslo. Then, back in the city, we visited the National Museum of Art. That evening, we went to a club called Smuget to hear a Norwegian band play soul and pop music.

We were supposed to be able to pick up our rental car in the city. After a five mile hike, we found the rental office closed, and had to hike another five miles back to the hotel. Then, we had to check out of the hotel and call a taxi to ferry us and our luggage to the train station. From there, we took the airport express to the airport to pick up a car there. Finally on the road, we encountered the first of hundreds of tunnels we would see. We also got our first taste of frozen fjords and the dwarfing power of the mountains. After skirting the southern coast, late that evening we took a room at a Pension in Kristiansand, Norway.

We took a detour from our main route to see the Mollestad Oak in Birkeland, , the third oldest tree in Norway (about 1000 years old). Then we went to the Southernmost point of Norway at Lindesnes. There is a Lighthouse and strangely weathered rocks that make it appear as a moonscape. From this area, we also saw the North Sea. Luck put us in what is rated as the best roadside diner in Norway. There, we had a delicious Elk steak. We found a nice pension in Stavanger that evening.

We made day-trips from Stavanger, Norway. First, we drove to barely accessible heights to see Preikestolen (preacher's chair) from across the Fjord. There was too much accumulated snow to reach it by foot, so we had to be content to see it from afar. From our vantage point, we met an older woman farming sheep. Then, back in Stavanger, we walked to the Stavanger Domkirke (Dome Church). We also saw Old Stavanger and the Waterfront.

Leaving Stavanger, we drove through Byfjord Tunnel ,5875 meters long. Then we took a ferry. There seems to be always tolls for ferries and long tunnels. When we gained some altitude, we saw quite a bit of old snow. As we descended again to a warmer Fjord, we saw portable oil rigs lined up along the fjord. We saw some nice falls and then took a ferry across Hardangerfjord.
We arrived in Bergen that night and had a hard time finding the pension we had booked. The streets on the hill are narrow switchbacks that are hard to manoeuver on with all the cars parked alongside. The pension had only an apartment available, and we gladly took it. It was nice to have room to spread out.

We visited the Bergen Aquarium in Bergen, Norway, seeing seals, penguins, and fish. Then, we picked up a nice piece of spiced salmon at the waterfront fish market. Then we rode the Floibanen Funicular (incline train) up
Mount Fløien
. Apparently, the locals too use the incline train to avoid heavy climbing. I sent some email from an internet cafe. We had a nice salmon dinner, cooked in the apartment, and were enjoying the extra space for a change.

In Bergen,
Norway
, we visited, Bryggens Museum, Haakon's Hall, Rosenkrantztårnet (Rosenkrantz Tower), and Mariakirken. Then, we checked out and went on the road again. We went through Lærdalstunnelen ,the world's longest road tunnel. We got a nice cabin-like apartment in Sogndal. In the lodge was a piano bar. We saw a good Norwegian band do a performance for a local teacher's meeting.

We woke to several inches of snow in Harpefossen, and wondered if we would be able to navigate the dirt road back to the main road. We drove in a blizzard for several hours making the Geirangerfjord barely visible. We drove out of the snow and found a nice cabin near Ålesund, Norway.

We visited the Ålesund Akvarium (Aquarium) in Ålesund, Norway, which we liked even better than the Bergen Aquarium. It didn't have penguins or seals, but it had much bigger fish tanks. We passed through Molde, expecting to be able to drive up a summit, but the road was closed, as many are off-season. We took another two ferries and then drove the Atlantic Highway, with a nice view of the Atlantic Ocean. Tired, we checked in a Trondheim hotel. It turned out to have bunks and be up four flights of stairs.

We decided that one night in that sailor hotel was enough. So, we found a rustic cabin on the outskirts of Trondheim, Norway. It had a kitchenette, but no bath, and was barely heated. We had to take a little hike to the bath house. We went back in Trondheim to see Nidaros Domkirke (Or Nidarosdomen or Nidaros Cathedral) , and then walked up hill at Bymarka.

We left Trondheim, Norway in a blizzard, but it stopped snowing within a couple of hours. We had to cover 538 kilometers back to Oslo. We made it back in the early evening at took a hotel room near the Oslo airport. We drove back into downtown Oslo for an Elk (moose) steak and to see a band at Smuget.

Flew from Oslo, Norway to Amsterdam Schiphol Airport. Had a long layover so we took the tube into Amsterdam, Netherlands. Saw Madame Tussaud's Wax Museum. Flew from Amsterdam to Nürnberg (Nuremberg), Germany. Took the tube from the airport to the train station and from there to Bayreuth. Back at home about 11pm. What a trip.
